I have photographed some incredible places.

I have stood before waterfalls in Iceland where the ground seemed to shake beneath my feet.

I have wandered through ancient streets in Europe where every stone seemed to whisper stories from hundreds of years ago.

I have watched the morning light touch mountain peaks, oceans, forests, and landscapes that almost seemed too beautiful to be real.

And sometimes...

Rediscovering beauty looks like a grown man sitting on top of a giant walleye in northern Minnesota.

And honestly?

I love that.

Because the older I get, and the longer I continue this journey as a photographer, the more convinced I become of something:

Beauty is not rare.

Our ability to notice it is.

We tend to think beauty is somewhere else.

Across an ocean.

At the end of a long hike.

In a famous national park.

At the perfect sunset location.

And yes, those places can be incredible. I will never stop chasing those moments.

But if we only allow ourselves to experience wonder in those places, we miss so much of the beauty that is happening right in front of us.

A road trip.

A small-town discovery.

A ridiculous roadside attraction that makes everyone laugh.

A conversation with someone you just met.

A quiet morning.

A moment with someone you love.

The little things.

The things we often drive right past.

The Photographer’s Greatest Tool

People often ask photographers about gear.

What camera do you use?

What lens?

What settings?

Those things matter. I love the technical side of photography.

But the greatest tool a photographer develops is not the camera.

It is the ability to see.

To notice.

To stay curious.

To look at the world with a sense of wonder.

Children naturally do this.

They stop for bugs on the sidewalk.

They notice shapes in the clouds.

They laugh at giant fish statues.

Somewhere along the way, many of us lose that.

We become busy.

Efficient.

Responsible.

We stop looking.

The Rediscover Beauty Project is my reminder, to myself as much as anyone else, that I never want to lose that childlike wonder.

The Ordinary Is Not Ordinary

Maybe today’s beautiful moment is not a mountain.

Maybe it is sunlight coming through your kitchen window.

Maybe it is your grandchild laughing.

Maybe it is a walk around the neighborhood.

Maybe it is sitting on a giant walleye in northern Minnesota.

The moment does not have to impress the world to be worth noticing.

It just has to wake you up a little.

It has to remind you:

“I am here.”

“I am alive.”

“This moment matters.”

So here is my challenge for you today.

Look around.

Find one small thing you normally would have missed.

Take a picture.

Write it down.

Share it with someone.

Because a beautiful life is not only built from once-in-a-lifetime moments.

It is built from thousands of ordinary moments we finally learned to see.

Maybe it is because Anne and I just celebrated 40 years of marriage.

Maybe it is because our kids are grown, building their own lives, and we are watching the next generation begin.

Maybe it is because after all these years of chasing light around the world — standing beneath waterfalls in Iceland, watching storms roll across mountain peaks, walking ancient streets in Europe, and waiting quietly beside the Mississippi River for the city lights to come alive — I keep returning to one simple truth:

Beauty matters.

And we desperately need more of it.

Not more noise.

Not more hurry.

Not more outrage.

Not another thing fighting for our attention.

More wonder.

More moments that make us stop and say…

“Wow. What an incredible gift this life is.”

The camera was never the point

I love photography.

I love the planning, the adventure, the patience of waiting for the perfect light.

I love creating images that people hang in their homes — little windows into moments they never want to forget.

But after decades of doing this, I realize the camera has always been a tool for something bigger.

It has taught me to see.

To slow down.

To notice.

To look for the fingerprints of God’s creativity all around us.

The glow of sunrise.

The power of the ocean.

The laughter of people we love.

The quiet places most people walk right past.

Because beauty changes us.

It awakens gratitude.

It inspires creativity.

It reminds us life is a gift.

Today I received some wonderful news.

My photograph of the Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge and skyline won 1st Place in The Beautiful City photography contest on Fine Art America.

I am honored. I am grateful.

But honestly, the story behind this photograph means even more to me than the award.

Because this image represents the beginning of a journey.

The First. The Original. The Iconic Stone Arch Bridge Image.

Years ago, when I was still early in my photography adventure — still learning, still experimenting, still discovering my artistic voice — my brother asked me to photograph the Minneapolis skyline.

Actually, maybe “commissioned” is too strong of a word.

He bought me dinner. 😄

But looking back now, what he really gave me was encouragement.

Someone saw something in me before I fully saw it myself.

And sometimes that is all an artist needs.

A little encouragement.

A little belief.

A little push to keep creating.

Capturing the Heart of Minneapolis

I still remember standing along the Mississippi River that evening.

The light was fading.

The historic Stone Arch Bridge began to glow.

The reflections danced across the water.

And behind it all, the Minneapolis skyline slowly came alive.

It was the perfect combination:

The old and the new.

History and progress.

The story of a city told in one scene.

The Stone Arch Bridge was built during the great railroad era, when Minneapolis became known as the flour milling capital of the world. That bridge helped move the grain that helped build this region.

And now, generations later, it stands as one of the most beloved symbols of the city.

The Unexpected Journey of One Photograph

When I captured this image, I had no idea where it would go.

I did not know it would become one of my most recognized pieces.

I did not know it would be used on book covers and in marketing projects.

I did not know it would end up hanging in beautiful homes and offices.

And I certainly did not know that years later I would be writing a post saying it won first place in a photography competition.

That is the amazing thing about creativity.

You never fully know what one small act of creating can become.

Gratitude

Every time I look at this photograph, I feel thankful.

Thankful for a brother who encouraged me.

Thankful for the gift of seeing beauty in the world around us.

Thankful for the opportunity to capture these moments.

And thankful for every single person who has supported this journey — whether you voted, purchased artwork, shared my images, took a class with me, or simply sent an encouraging note.

Those little moments matter.

You never know how far one word of encouragement can go.

What is the most beautiful view of Minneapolis?

Scroll through any creative corner of the internet right now and you will find the same post, dressed up in a thousand slightly different fonts.

“I deleted Instagram. I closed my Facebook. I walked away from the algorithm. I’m on Substack now. I finally feel free.”

There is a standing ovation in the replies. People share it. Other creators nod along and start drafting their own version. Within a week, someone else posts the same thing and the cycle starts over.

I want to say something that might be uncomfortable.

That post is social media. And Substack is too.

What Actually Makes Something “Social Media”

Let’s get clear on the definition before anyone gets defensive.

Social media is a platform where you create content, build an audience, interact with followers, and grow through the platform’s own discovery mechanics. You don’t own the audience. You don’t control the algorithm. You don’t set the rules. If the platform changes its terms, changes its reach, or shuts down tomorrow, your years of work go with it.

Now ask yourself: does Substack fit that description?

You write content on Substack. You build subscribers on Substack. You interact with readers in Substack’s comment threads and chat. You grow by appearing in Substack’s recommendation engine. You get discovered when other Substack writers recommend you.

That is not a newsletter. That is social media with a longer scroll.

Substack Is Smart. That’s the Point.

None of this is a criticism of Substack as a product. It is a remarkably well-designed platform. The writing experience is clean. The reader experience is good. The monetization tools are useful. The team has done a genuinely impressive job building something that feels more intentional than Instagram and more thoughtful than X.

But “feels better” is not the same as “fundamentally different.”

Substack has platform risk just like every other social platform. They have already raised over $100 million in venture capital. They have investors. They have growth targets. At some point, the pressure to monetize the audience more aggressively will arrive. It always does. That is not cynicism, it is the documented history of every platform that has ever existed.

The people who built their entire audience on Facebook Pages in 2012 will tell you what happens when a platform decides it is time to change the rules. The podcasters who built entirely inside Apple Podcasts will tell you the same story. The YouTubers who remember what it felt like when monetization policies shifted overnight will tell you.

Substack will not be different. It will just be later.

The Real Problem With “I Quit Social Media”

Here is the thing that nobody in these posts wants to say out loud.

Quitting Instagram to go “all in on Substack” is not a strategic move. It is a mood.

It feels like freedom because Substack does not have likes visible to the public. It feels like authenticity because the format rewards longer writing. It feels like ownership because you have a list of email addresses that Substack lets you export.

But “letting you export” is not the same as owning. You can export your Substack list today. What you cannot do is control whether those subscribers ever open another email again if they stop using Substack, change their habits, or simply have inboxes so crowded that your newsletter becomes background noise.

Meanwhile, while you were performing the ritual of deleting social media, your website sat there. Quiet. Unoptimized. Waiting. Wondering why you stopped sending people to it.

The Wheel and the Hub

Here is the mental model that actually works.

Imagine a wheel. The spokes are Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, X, Pinterest, and yes, Substack. Each one reaches a different kind of person in a different kind of mood. Each one has its own culture, its own format, its own timing.

The hub of that wheel is your website.

Your website is the only place you truly own. It does not have an algorithm that decides to throttle your reach because you did not pay for an ad. It does not have a CEO who decides to change the terms of service after you have built your entire creative life on the platform. It does not go through funding rounds that change the incentives of the people running it.

When someone finds your photography on Pinterest and clicks through, where do they go? Your website. When someone reads your Substack and wants to buy a print, where do they go? Your website. When someone sees your work on Instagram and searches your name on Google, what do they find? Your website.

Every platform you are on should be doing one job: sending warm, interested people toward the hub. Toward the place where you control the experience, the transaction, the story, and the relationship.

Deleting social media to live entirely on Substack does not build a hub. It just moves your spoke.

This Is Not Either / Or

The creators winning right now are not the ones who picked one platform and went all in. They are the ones who understood that every platform is a different door into the same house.

Your Substack can be powerful. A genuine email newsletter with long-form writing that deepens your relationship with the people who already care about your work is one of the most valuable things you can build. But it works best as a complement, not a replacement.

Your Instagram post catches someone who has never heard of you. Your Facebook community nurtures the people who have been following for years. Your LinkedIn reaches the interior designer who is looking for exactly what you create for her next hotel project. Your Substack gives your most devoted collectors a deeper look at your process, your philosophy, the story behind the image they are about to buy. Your Pinterest drives consistent organic search traffic that finds you while they are planning a renovation.

And your website is where all of that pays off.

The Question Worth Asking

Before you write the “I quit social media for Substack” post, ask yourself one honest question.

Are you leaving because you have a real strategy for building something more durable? Or are you leaving because Instagram made you feel bad last Tuesday and Substack feels calmer right now?

Both are valid human feelings. Only one of them is a business decision.

The platforms that feel toxic often feel that way because we have confused performance metrics with genuine connection. The solution to that is not to find a new platform to perform on. The solution is to know why you are on any platform at all, what you are asking that platform to do for you, and where you are sending people when they want more.

That answer should never be “to my Substack.”

It should be “to my website. To my work. To me.”

What to Do Instead

Stop thinking in all-or-nothing terms. The question is never “which platform should I live on?” The question is “what job does each platform do in my overall strategy?”

Show up on the platforms where your people are, with content shaped for that specific format and community. Let each platform do what it does well. Drive all of it back to the hub.

Build your website like it matters. Because it is the only thing that is actually yours.

Use Substack if you love long-form writing and want to deepen your relationship with an existing audience. It is a great tool. But do not confuse a great tool with a foundation.

And the next time you see someone post that they are “finally free” because they deleted Instagram for Substack, share this with them.

Gently. With love.

Because they traded one spoke for another, and called it a wheel.

I’ve stood in that spot more times than I can count. And every single time, I feel it.

That pull. That stillness. That reminder of why I picked up a camera in the first place.

The Shot That Started Everything

That Minneapolis skyline image I mentioned? It was taken at the Stone Arch Bridge on a glorious early summer evening.

Everything was magical. The light, the air, the way the city reflected off the river -- one of those rare nights where the world just cooperates completely.

My brother commissioned the shot. He wanted it for his home, and he bought me dinner as payment. Not a bad deal.

What I didn’t expect was that a casual evening shoot for family would produce one of the most meaningful images of my career. Sometimes the best work happens when the pressure is off and you’re simply enjoying the moment through the lens.
